Dr. Betty Jane
Showell-Tyson, the second oldest of ten children was born on
April 3, 1937, to Bishop Winfield and Mother Genevive Showell. From
birth, Betty was immersed
in the rich Pentecostal tradition of the Apostolic church. From an early age, Betty was considered to be a gifted child, one destined to rewrite history. At the young age of 5, she was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost at 12 years of age. Sister Betty's upbringing in a ministerial family provided the rich training ground for unparamounted contributions to the body of Christ, the work of the ministry, and the House of God. While still a preteen, under the spiritual mentorship of her mother and grandmother, Sister Betty attended prayer meetings, engaged in missionary work, cared for the senior members of the church, cleaned homes of the sick, read the Bible to the infirmed and directed the youth choir. As Sister Betty began to grow and mature in the "things of God," her ministry gifts were needed in new areas of kingdom building. At the First Apostolic Faith Church, where her father was the pastor for 44 years, she was the director of the Echoneers Young Adult Choir for over 25 years, director of the Vacation Bible School, program chairlady of the Women's Auxiliary, editor of the Young People's Newsletter, Youth Day chairlady and youth and young adult advisor. Nationally, Sister Betty was appointed by Bishop Smallwood E. Williams, Presiding Bishop of the Bibleway Worldwide organization, as the first secretary of the Bibleway Worldwide "Little Folks" Convention and Junior Church. In addition to the many spiritual gifts that God bestowed upon Sister Betty, He also blessed her with exceptional natural gifts. Sister Betty was a distinguished scholar, an award-winning school administrator, outstanding teacher, educational consultant, prolific writer, lecturer and researcher. On January 31, 1981, Sister Betty Showell married Bishop James E. Tyson, pastor of Christ Church Apostolic, and diocesan of the Fourth Episcopal District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. Throughout the 15 years of their marriage, Bishop and Dr. Tyson excelled in their work for the Lord. Together, with a spirit of excellence, they would strive to bring the Christ Church family to a new level of performance with perfection. Dr. Tyson began to serve her new church as the church business administrator, program coordinator, and Vision 2000 strategist and planner. She could be found visiting the sick, counseling the troubled, conducting workshops, mentoring the young people and caring for those less fortunate than others. As others began to become attracted to and by her spirit of manifested excellence, they were drawn to the "woman of wisdom that knew how to make things work!" Though some did not know how to accept this young dreamer of destiny, nevertheless they stood in awe of her brilliance, boldness, beauty and blessedness. What they did not know was that they were in the presence of one of God's pre-selected souls, who had been released upon the earth to help the world! Sister Tyson was not driven by mission, but clearly directed by divine purpose. Just as God allowed Dr. Tyson to descend to mend human brokenness, on April 24, 1996, He called her to return to the place of her first love. She can be heard saying, "Saints, it was but a little while that I passed from you, but I have found Him whom my soul loveth: I have beheld Him, and cannot let Him go. The excellence that I pursued in the earth…I have found in the presence of the King!" |
